In 1889, the primary proposal to create a statue had been rejected by the Princess Isabel mainly because when Brazil became a Republic, the laws were mandating to separate the church and state. In 1921, the second suggestion was made by the Archdiocese and he arranged an event named Semana do Monumento which means Monument Week to acquire the charitable contributions and the cash. The design first decided on was a globe in the hands of the Christ and a pedestal denoting the entire world but soon after a design that included open arms was decided upon.
